Cayo District is located west of the nation of Belize and carries the boarder entrance to Guatemala. The Cayo District hosts nation's capital of Belmopan, also the town of Benque Viejo del Carmen, and the villages of Arenal, Armenia, Blackman Eddy, Buena Vista, Calla Creek, Camalote, Cristo Rey, Esperanza, Georgeville, Los Tambos, More Tomorrow, Ontario, Roaring Creek, St. Margaret's, San Antonio Cayo, San Jose Santa Elena, Spanish Lookout, Succotz, Teakettle, Unitedville, and Valley of Peace,. The district town is San Ignacio. San Ignacio is located along the Western Highway and adjacent to Santa Elena town which is about 70 miles and 90 minutes drive time from Belize City. It is excellent for trips to the surrounding hills, streams, archeological sites, caves and forests. San Ignacio is a peaceful and relaxing town which pulsates in the heart of the Cayo District and is the focus of tourism in western Belize. The population is typically diverse, mostly made up of Spanish speaking Mennonites, Lebanese, Chinese and even Sri Lankans. San Ignacio is sociable, relaxed, and good climate a remarkable place to live.
San Antonio is a village surrounded by scattered milpa farms with the forested Maya Mountains in the background. In the Yucateca Mayan Village of San Antonio, located on the Cristo Rey Road there is a humble limestone and clay building with a simple palm thatch leaf roof known as the Tanah Art Museum. On display in the museum are magnificent slate stone carvings of an ancient Caracol ruler, a famous Palenque elder, a Xunantunich warrior, a Maya ceremonial table for offerings of thanksgiving, and a replica of the Sun God Kunich Ahua from Altun Ha, to name just a few. There is also Eligio Panti National Park its landscape is remarkable and guides from the village can take you on horseback to see caves and waterfalls. One of the oldest known pre classic sites in Belize and continued to prosper throughout the classic period is the Ruins of Pacbitun. San Antonio is humble, peaceful and adventurous village.
Mountain Pine Ridge forest reserve is located at Southeast of San Ignacio and accessed by both the Chiquibul and Cristo Rey roads. On the northern side of the ridge are thousand feet falls, actually over 1600 ft and the highest in Central America Mountain. Encompassing a spectacular range of rolling hills, peaks and gorges formed from some of the oldest rocks in Central American, the Reserve covers nearly 300 square miles of unpaved roads and nature trails. Rio Frio Caves is also located less than a mile from the Pine Forest Headquarters in Augustine. Pine Ridge is a spectacular forest, in which you can hear all types birds singing. The area is just right for hiking and mountain biking.
Caracol is described as the outstanding largest archeological site in Belize, One of the largest in the Maya world, tallest man-made structure in Belize (Caana). Caracol was lost in the rainforest for over a thousand years until its rediscovery by Chiclero Rosa Mai in 1937. Caracol is sixteen kilometers past the reserve headquarters; the Chiquibul Road crosses the Macal River over the low Guacamallo Bridge.
