Facts on Stann Creek District:
Stann Creek District is located in the South East region of Belize. The villages of Stann Creek are Alta Vista, Big Creek, Commerce Bight, Cowpen, Dancing Pool, Georgetown, Guana Church Bank, High Sand, Hope Creek, Hopkins, Hummingbird Community, Independence, Kendal, Lagarto Bank, Long Bank, Mango Creek, Maya Centre, Maya Mopan, Melinda, Middle Bank, Middlesex, Mullins River, New Home, Placencia, Pomona, Quarry Hill, Rancho Grande, Red Bank, Regalia, Riversdale, San Juan, San Roman, Sarawina, Santa Rosa, Seine Bight, Silk Grass, Silver Creek Camp, Sittee, Steadfast, South Stann Creek, and Valley Community. It has population of approximately 27,000 people and is the largest town in southern Belize with its capital being the City of Dangriga. Dangriga is the home of the Garifuna and where the Punta Rock and Caribbean music can be found and is also well know for its cassava bread, hudut and cashew wine.
Hopkins is the village of Garifuna. The village was created in 1942 to replace the village of Newtown, which was devastated by a hurricane further up the coast. The village is separated into two parts; the North side (Baila) and the Southside (False Sittee). Habitants are known for there kindness and friendliness in Hopkins. Actually Hopkins was voted the friendliest Village in Belize by Belize First Magazine. It has remarkable beaches and is surrounded by the Maya Mountains.
Placencia was founded by English buccaneers in the early 1600's. The majority of the families in this village all carry surnames that speaks of their pirate history. It is a narrow peninsula on the Caribbean Sea coast of the Stann Creek District in Belize. Placencia Village is the largest community on the peninsula. Placencia is well known for its beautiful beaches which make it the best place to relax. It is breathtaking, cooled by the sea side, the shade of palm trees and the gorgeous attraction. Placencia is a place of relaxation and much more. Placencia boast several large condo developments. Of the coast of the Stann Creek District are many small cayes and is known to carry Belize best chain of cayes and small islands. These islands can be accessed from boats in Placencia, Seine Bight, Hopkins, and Dangriga from this area. The Stann Creek District has a unique attraction that is very distinctive from other parts of Belize.
