Facts on Toledo District:

Toledo is the southernmost district of Belize and the heart of the Maya descendants' population of Belize. It is the least populated district in Belize with a population under 23,000 with the majority of the inhabitants living in pockets of small villages. The hub of activities is the town Punta Gorda. There are also other towns like Monkey River Town and Toledo Settlement. San Antonio and San Pedro Columbia are the biggest of the Maya villages in Toledo. Other villages are Aguacate, Barranco, Bella Vista, Big Falls, Bladen, Blue Creek, Boom Creek, Cattle Landing, Conejo, Corazon, Crique, Crique Jute Mafredi, Crique Sarco, Dolores, Dump, Eldridge, Esperanza, Forest Home, Golden Stream, Graham Creek, Hicattee, Hopeville, Indian Creek, Jacintoville, Jalacte, Joventud, Lagarto, Laguna, Mabelha, Mango Walk, Midway, Monkey River Town, New Road Area, Otoxha Village, Pueblo Viejo, San Benito Poite San Felipe, San Jose, San Lucas, San Marcus, San Miguel, San Pablo, San Vicente, Sanata Anna, Santa Cruz, Santa Elena, Santa Teresa, Silver Creek, Sunday Wood, Swasey, Trio, Xpicilha Village, and Yemeri Grove.

There are three ancient Maya ruins which are Nim Li Punit, Uxbenka, and Lubaantun. Nim Li Punit was discovered in 1976 is the home to the largest and one of the best preserved stelae in Belize. It is located 40 kilometers north of the town of Punta Gorda. It is sometimes known as Big hat or Top hat. It consists of structures around three plazas, including several step-pyramids, the tallest being 12.2 meters high. The site has a number of carved stelae illustrating the ancient city's rulers.

Lubaantun, in Spanish orthography, is a pre-Columbian ruined city of the Maya civilization. It is 4 kilometers northwest of Punta Gorda. The most distinguishing features of Lubaantun are the large collection of miniature ceramic objects found on the site. The Uxbenka is a pre-Columbian Mesoamerican archaeological site. It is one of five major Maya sites in this region.
Punta Gorda is one of the largest towns in Southern Belize. The people are mostly English and speak Garifuna and East Indian and the town has a population of around 6,000 which include Garifuna, Maya, Creoles, East Indians, some Lebanese and Chinese. Punta Gorda is the business centre for a large number of nearby villages and farming settlements. Punta Gorda is known for its dense tropical rain forest and for receiving the most rain fall in the country of Belize. Punta Gorda district is another district which is so diverse from the rest of Belize.
